Mount Sunapee Ski and Snowboard Resort, New Hampshire

Mountain Layout—Skiing

Mount Sunapee squeezes out excellent skiing from just a couple of hundred acres. There is something for almost everyone on the mountain. While experts won't be taxed here, there are a couple of runs, like Goosebumps, that can certainly get the adrenaline running, a wide variety of upper intermediate terrain, and the glades keep everyone on top of their game.

This really is a perfect mountain for intermediates, and that means families. There are plenty of runs to keep anyone content for the day or the weekend.

The mountain is split by a ridge, with some good meandering trails and glades dropping on both sides. Pick your side and start there, then move to the other side of the ridge. Once you commit, you're skiing or snowboarding on one side or the other.

Here's a trail map.

Expert, Advanced:

There are no true double-black trails on the mountain. Goosebumps is the only trail with semi-expert pitch, and it's narrow cut, which means you have to turn.

The glades, such as Sunrise, Ridge and Summit Glades, offer attention-getting vertical. With minimum crowds, they are lots of fun.

Intermediate:

This is the group that will love Mount Sunapee. On the lake side, or east side, of the mountain, cruise down Williamson, Wingding, Liftline and Skyway. These are classic cruising runs that still follow the rhythm of the mountain.

On the west side of the ridge, drop right down below the Summit Lodge onto Old Goat, Westside, or Bonanza, and continue onto Chipmunk.

Lynx has a black diamond, but it is wide enough to be tamed by any good intermediate.

Outer Ridge and Upper Ridge skirt the area boundary and provide the longest cruisers on the mountain.

Beginner, First-timer:

South Peak, an entirely separate area, is set aside for beginners. Enjoy Province, Paradise, Explorer and Calypso all day long on your own lift.

The learning center has a dedicated learn-to-ski area where skiers and riders can master their first turns before heading to the beginner terrain. This is an excellent learning setup—it's out of the way of more advanced skiers and snowboarders.
