Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory (244-5641) is just down the road in Waterbury, and has tours that include samples. Winter is not nearly as busy as summer, so it's a good time to visit. Stowe has more than a hundred shops and art galleries for browsing, most in town. Shaw's General Store is a century old and was the town's first ski shop. Other unusual shops are Moriarty Hats & Sweaters, for knitted goods, and the Stowe Craft Gallery for handcrafted, contemporary works. At the Cabot Annex complex, in Waterbury, you can purchase a wide variety of Vermont specialty foods. The complex also is home to Lake Champlain Chocolates (Yum!), Vermont Teddy Bears and Mesa International, which sells home furnishings.

Special events include the Stowe Winter Carnival in January, the country's oldest winter party; the Mountain Adventure Fest Tour de Stowe cross-country races, as well as the Stowe Derby—the country's oldest combination downhill/cross-country even—both held in February; the highly-competitive Sugar Slalom race, with maple-sugar-on-snow at the finish line, and the Stowe Snow Beach Party, both in April.
