Other activities
Stowe is home to two world-class spas: the Spa at Topnotch Resort (253-6463) and the Spa at Stoweflake Mountain Resort (253-7355). With booklets full of treatments, massaging waterfalls, and gender-specific hot tubs, saunas, and steamrooms, you could easily forget about skiing and spend the entire day at either spa.
Indoor
tennis can be played at the Topnotch Tennis Center (253-9649) on the Mountain
Road. The center has four indoor courts and offers lessons, round robins, and Boomer, a computer-guided ball machine that let's you play actual matches. In the Village, Jackson Arena has an Olympic-size ice
skating rink (253-6148). The Swimming Hole (253-9229) has a 25-meter indoor pool, kids pool with waterslide, fitness classes and weight training equipment.
Rent snowmobiles at
Nichols Snowmobiles (253-7239) or from Farm Resort (888-3525). The
Sterling Ridge Inn (644-8265), in Jeffersonville, offers snowmobile
tours of Smugglers' Notch. Horse-drawn sleigh rides take
place at Edson Hill Manor (253-7371), Stowehof Inn (253-9722), Pristine
Meadows (253-9901), Charlie Horse (253-2215), Stoweflake (253-7355),
the Trapp Family Lodge (253-8511) and Topnotch (253-8585). Stowe
also has horseback riding at Edson Hill Manor (253-7371)
and Stowehof Inn (253-9722).
The Vermont Ski Museum is located on Main Street in Stowe Village. Ben
and Jerry's ice cream factory (244-5641) is just down the road
in Waterbury, and has tours that include samples. Winter is not nearly
as busy as summer, so it's a good time to visit. The Cabot Cheese
Factory (563-2231) is also open.
Stowe has more than a hundred
shops and art galleries for browsing, most in town.
Shaw's General Store is a century old and was the town's first ski
shop. Other unusual shops are Moriarty Hats & Sweaters, for knitted
goods, and the Stowe Craft Gallery for handcrafted, contemporary
works. At the Cabot Annex complex, in Waterbury, you can purchase
a wide variety of Vermont specialty foods. The complex also is home
to Lake Champlain Chocolates (Yum!), Vermont Teddy Bears and Mesa
International, which sells home furnishings.
Special
events include the Stowe Winter Carnival in January, the country's
oldest winter party; the Mountain Adventure Fest Tour de Stowe cross-country
races, as well as the Stowe Derbythe country's oldest combination
downhill/cross-country evenboth held in February; the highly-competitive Sugar
Slalom race, with maple-sugar-on-snow at the finish line, and the
Stowe Snow Beach Party, both in April.
