By air: Spokane International Airport, in Spokane, Wash., is the nearest major airport. For ground transportation, call Moose Express (208-676-1561). Car rentals are available at the airport. The airport is 86 miles from Schweitzer, 75 miles from Silver Mountain and 40 miles from Coeur d’Alene.

By rail: Amtrak’s Empire Builder stops in downtown Sandpoint, with connections to Seattle, Portland, St. Paul and Chicago. Car rentals are available in Sandpoint.

By car: Schweitzer is in Sandpoint, 90 minutes from Spokane. Take I-90 to Coeur d’Alene, then Hwy. 95 north to Sandpoint. The 9-mile access road to the ski area has six hairpin switchbacks and can be a bit hairy. Silver Mountain is in Kellogg, about 75 minutes from Spokane and right off I-90 east of Coeur d’Alene. If you make home base in Coeur d’Alene, Schweitzer is 50 miles and Silver is 40 miles away. Coeur d’Alene is off I-90, between Spokane and Kellogg.
