The rambling Rangeley Inn and Motor Lodge (207/864-3341 or 800/666-3687; $$) is a Victorian hotel with adjacent motel smack downtown. Some rooms have whirlpools and/or fireplaces or woodstoves, and there’s a good tavern, with weekend entertainment in the hotel.
Views, views, views. Adjacent to the hilltop Mingo Springs Golf Course is the appropriately named Country Club Inn ((864-3831; $$), with sweeping views over the Rangeley Lake and the surrounding peaks. The rooms are somewhat dated, but the dining room is excellent, and it’s easy to settle into the huge living room with a fireplace on either end. Rates can include breakfast only or breakfast and dinner.
Less than a half mile from downtown is Pleasant Street Inn (864-5916; $$), a completely renovated and expanded Maine farmhouse with such niceties as Wi-fi and sat TV. Two rooms have whirlpool tubs. There’s plenty of room to spread out, and guests have access to a pantry stocked with afternoon refreshments and a computer. Rates include a full breakfast.
Recently reopened Loon Lodge (864-5666; $$) is close to the Saddleback Road and right on the east shore of Rangeley Lake. Lodgey in character, rooms range from tiny with no views to expansive with great views. Amenities are few, and some rooms have detached baths. Also on the premises is a restaurant that has yet to hit its stride; ask locally before dining here.
Another downtown choice, this one with views of Rangeley Lake, is the North Country Inn B&B (800-295-4968; $$), a small, four-room inn, where all the guest rooms have cable TV and queen-size beds.
Two cabin colonies cater to snowmobilers and skiers in winter. Hunter Cove on Rangeley Lake (864-3383; $$$) has eight, two-bedroom cabins, all with woodstove, phone and TV; some have whirlpool tubs in the living room. On the southwest shore of Rangeley Lake, about 6 miles from the Saddleback Road, is Nioban Camps (864-2549; $$), with two-bedroom lakefront cabins, built in 2000. There’s a central lodge with Ping-Pong table, TV and games. Snowmobiling and snowshoeing trails leave from the property.
