Saddleback, Maine

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing

Rangeley Lakes Trails Center (864-4309) is a new operation, with an expanding 50 km of groomed trails through the preserve on lower Saddleback Mountain. It’s run by the volunteer, nonprofit Rangeley Lakes Cross Country Ski Club and is located about a mile or so below the mountain’s base facility (look for the yurt). A full-day weekend or holiday pass is $16 for adults, $6 for kids; midweek is $13 for adults, $4 for kids. For guided backcountry expeditions, contact Rich Gecki (864-5136). The trail system at Orgonon, the Wilhelm Reich Museum (864-3443) is free. Saddleback is extremely popular with telemark skiers, especially on the annual Tele-mark Invasion Saddleback, scheduled Feb. 3, 2007.
