Snowshoe — Getting there and around
By air: Roanoke, Va., airport is about three hours from the resort. Yeager Airport in Charleston, W.V., is about 3.5 hours away. Greenbrier Valley Airport in Lewisburg, W.V., about 1.5 hours from Snowshoe, is only served by US Airways, but offers the Greenbrier Valley Airport Shuttle (304-536-1193) for those who choose not to drive.
By car: You’re going to end up driving here, even if you fly, since the nearest sizable airport is nearly three hours away. The resort is on Rte. 66 off Rte. 219, about 45 miles south of Elkins, W.V. It’s rather remote no matter from which direction you approach. From the south or the west, take I-64, exit at White Sulphur Springs, then take Hwy. 92 and 39 to Marlinton, until you see the Snowshoe signs. From the north, take I-79, exit at Weston (Highway 33 at exit 9), go to Elkins, then south on Hwy. 219. From the East, it’s I-81 to Staunton, Rte. 42/39 west to Rte. 28 south; or, from Harrisonburg, Va., take Rte. 33 west to Rte. 28 south.
Getting around: As long as you’re on the mountain, the shuttle bus will reliably get you where you need to go. If you want to go off-mountain, you’re going to need that car. Parking is a bit chaotic; however, Rimfire Lodge has underground parking.
