Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac (800-441-1414; 692-3861; $$–$$$$; left), perched on the edge of the Cap Diamant promontory in Old Québec’s upper town, is the grande dame of Québec City. It is historic, formal, elegant and full-service. Rooms vary greatly, from small to spacious, some offering magnificent views of the St. Lawrence. Most packages here include the hotel’s bountiful buffet breakfast, enough to fuel you through most of the day. The hotel has a health club with indoor pool and a full-service spa.

Also full service are the Québec Hilton (800-445-8667; 647-2411; $$–$$$$), and Hotel Loews Le Concorde (800-235-6397; 647-2222; $$–$$$$), both in old Québec, but outside the city walls.

Some of the top hotels in town are termed "boutique hotels." The following five, all in the vieux-port area, are among the city’s best places to stay.

Hotel Dominion 1912 (692-2224; $$–$$$), perhaps the best of the lot, is ultra-modern yet hidden in an old factory. Glass showers and sinks highlight the bathrooms, and the beds are covered with mounds of down. The spacious rooms have Bose Wave Radios and 27-inch TVs. Breakfast is a non-stop continental affair.

The intimate Auberge Saint-Pierre (888-268-1017; 694-7981; $–$$$) is a treat. Guest rooms range from the petite economique ones with barely enough room to set down a suitcase, to grand suites, with elaborate whirlpool tubs for two. There’s a nice bar and a quiet living room with fireplace.

The Auberge Saint-Antoine (888-692-2211; 692-2211; $–$$$), is a luxurious retreat in the heart of a lively, attractive, 18th-century neighborhood with museums, art galleries, antique shops, boutiques and restaurants. Rooms are spread out in 300-year-old buildings on an important archaeological site. Artfully displayed artifacts throughout the hotel provide a glimpse into the life of Québec’s first inhabitants. Some of the 95 rooms have views on the St. Lawrence River, others of Québec’s fortifications and many have a terrace and/or fireplace.

Hotel Le Clos Saint-Louis (694-1311; $–$$) is a romantic 25-room hotel filled with period antiques. Rooms are spacious, each with private bath, and the hotel, built as a stately home in 1844, opens directly onto one of the old city’s main streets.

Hotel Le Priori (692-3992; $–$$) has small rooms but much larger suites.

Small hotels within the city walls are the Hotel Clarendon (888-554-6001; 692-2480; $$–$$$), the Hotellerie Fleur-de-Lys (800-567-2106; 694-0106; $$–$$$), and the Manoir de l’Esplanade (694-0834; $–$$).

Hotel Acadia (800-463-0280; 694-0280; $–$$) serves a continental breakfast and also has packages with Mont-Sainte-Anne.

The Hotel Manoir Victoria (800-463-6283; 692-1030; $–$$$), in the old city, is a good choice for families. Also popular with families is L’Hotel du Vieux-Quebec (800-361-7787; 692-1850; $$–$$$).

Auberge Louis-Hébert (525-7812; $$), on the Grande Allée, the heart of Québec City’s nightlife, also has a good restaurant, and rates include breakfast. As is true of much of old Québec, the comforts are modern within 17th-century walls.

Small inns and bed & breakfasts are clustered around the Frontenac and offer simple rooms, usually with breakfast, at affordable rates. Try the Hotel Manoir de la Terrasse (694-1592; $), the Manoir Sainte-Genevieve (694-1666; $–$$) or the Chateau Bellevue (800-463-2716; 692-2573; $–$$).

Three hostels provide bottom-dollar lodging: Auberge International de Quebec (694-0755; $), a member of Hostelling International, which has a cafeteria and 279 beds in various configurations, including private and family rooms; Auberge de la Paix (694-0735; $), which has 14 rooms with two to eight beds, a kitchen and breakfast; or Association du YWCA de Québec (683-2155; $), with shared bathrooms, swimming pool and self-service kitchen.

For something completely different, consider one night at the Ice Hotel (www.icehotel-canada.com; $$$$). Constructed and furnished completely of snow and ice, it opens in January and closes about three months later, when it melts. Sleeping bags are guaranteed to keep guests warm to 30-degrees below zero; it's a lot like winter camping, only fancier.

Accommodations Legend: (double room) $$$$–C$200+; $$$–C$141–$200; $$–C$81–$140; $–C$80 and less
