June Mountain, California

Mountain layout
—Skiing

June Mountain doesn't have Mammoth's range of terrain, but most skiers and boarders will enjoy it. The pace at June is slower and the crowds considerably fewer. It is a very good choice for mid-winter Saturdays and holiday periods, as well as for families with young children who ski faster than their parents.

June Mountain has none of the high broad bowls that make Mammoth Mountain famous. The steepest terrain at June, The Face, is as steep as anything at Mammoth. Because it is on the lower mountain, it unfortunately doesn't keep the snow as long as the upper runs. Since June is more sheltered than Mammoth and none of its slopes is above treeline, June tends to hold powder longer than Mammoth's more exposed bowls and the snow doesn't crust up so quickly. There's a great view of June Lake from the upper runs.

Though June has a few expert drops, this level will be bored quickly. Intermediates will have a ball, however. Schatzi is a fantastic and long cruiser, and Matterhorn often is totally deserted. Beginners should stick to the mid-mountain, though Silverado is a gentle, long and uncrowded trail from the Rainbow Summit.

June Mountain has three terrain parks covering 50 acres. For a small ski area, June is an impressively big player in terrain park innovation, with a top-notch superpipe that gets cut nightly, large jumps and tabletops, and rails of every variety.
