Le Massif offers skiing packages at bed and breakfasts, inns and motels as well as chalets and villas in nearby towns. Most include dinner for guests and also are open to the public for dinner. Baie-Saint-Paul, with a population of about 6,000, is the largest town and offers the best variety of dining and lodging as well as nightlife. For regional information, call (800) 667-2276.

Auberge La Maison Otis (800-267-2254; 435-2255; $$–$$$) pampers guests with one of the region’s best dining rooms, a full-service spa, a cozy lounge, a lively pub and even a discoteque. Auberge La Grande Maison (800-361-5575; 435-5575; $–$$), built in 1913, was previously a hospital and is now a charming bed and breakfast run by a local family.

Auberge La Pignoronde (888-554-6004; 435-5505; $–$$$$; above) sits on a hillside overlooking the town and bay, and is some of the closest lodging to Le Massif. It’s a good choice for families. Hotel Baie-Saint-Paul (800-650-3683; 435-3683; $) has spacious, although basic, rooms, an indoor pool and a restaurant.

La Malbaie, 45 minutes east of Le Massif, has an excellent selection of chic lodging as well as a small ski area, Grand Fonds. The grandest lodging is at Le Manoir Richelieu (800-866-5577; 665-3703; $$–$$$$), a four-star, five-diamond Fairmont resort with all the amenities you would expect, as well as a casino, indoor and outdoor pools, and full spa. Other on-site activities include cross-country, snowmobile and snowshoe trails, a skating rink, sleigh rides and dogsledding. Auberge des 3 Canards (800-461-3761; 665-3761; $$$–$$$$), just down the hill from the Manoir Richelieu, rivals its larger and more famous neighbor. Deluxe rooms come with jetted tubs for two and a fireplace.

L’Auberge des Peupliers (888-282-3743; 665-4423; $$$–$$$$; right) sits high atop a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River and is one of the oldest guesthouses in the Charlevoix region. Rooms are a pleasant mix of antique and rustic, but include all the modern amenities you’re accustomed to having. Sauna and indoor hot tub, plus spa services available upon request. Breakfast and a five-course gourmet regional dinner prepared by a renowned chef are included.

One of the best reasons to visit Canada in the winter is to get low-season rates at high-end resorts. One such place is the Relais & Chateaux property La Pinsonnière (800-387-4431; 665-4431; $$–$$$$), a country inn hugging the shore in La Malbaie. Impeccable service, fine cuisine and a flair for romance define its character. A most impressive collection of masterpieces from regional artists hangs on the walls of the dining room and throughout the inn.

If you're not staying near the mountain, the best option is to stay in Québec City.
