Getting there:
By air: Flights will arrive in Burlington, Vt., or Albany, N.Y. Organized transportation from the airports to the resort is sporadic. Rent a car. Commuter service is available into the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear, about 30 minutes from Lake Placid.
By train: Trains stop at Westport on the New York CityMontreal
line. There has been a shuttle bus from the train station to the
resort in the past, but in our experience this is not a convenient
way to reach Lake Placid. If you plan to travel this way, ask the
Lake Placid Visitors Bureau (800-447-5224). Amtrak has ski packages;
call 800-872-7245 for more info.
By car: From the south, take Exit 24 (Albany) off the New York State Thruway (I-87). Take Northway (still I-87) to Exit 30, follow Rte. 9 north two miles to Rte. 73 and continue 28 miles to Lake Placid. From the west, take I-90 (N.Y. State Thruway) to Exit 36 (Syracuse) for I-81. Follow I-81 north to Watertown, go east on Rte. 3 to Saranac Lake, then take Rte. 86 east to Lake Placid.
Getting around: Its about a 9 mile drive to Whiteface and 6 miles to Mt. Van Hoevenberg from the center of Lake Placid. While there is a free shuttle service that connects the town with Whiteface, from Christmas until April 1, having a car available makes moving around town and to the activity venues more convenient.
