Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, Hancock, Massachusetts

Mountain Layout—Skiing

Jiminy Peak is a classic north – south – ridgeline. But that doesn’t mean all trails have a boring sameness. There is a lot of variety that has been planned into this layout which has gradually been expanded and improved over the years.

For advanced skiers, Jericho is most popular double black trail. The initial pitch will satisfy most appetites for steep. But when the sun goes down and the lights come on, its neighbor, Upper and Lower Whitetail becomes the challenge of choice. For those who want all bumps, all the time, look for Cutter.

Intermediates have the widest choice, literally the resort end to end. A good plan is to start the day on the Summit Triple Chair and work the blue squares that drop off the West Way trail. Then, after a break at Hendricks Summit Lodge, take Left Bank for a cruise down to the other end of the resort to Widow White’s quad lift. There are several intermediate trials to work from there. Now, with ski legs and ski heart ready for more, go to the Berkshire Express six passenger chair at the center of the resort and give a black diamond a try. Then take the Berkshire Express back up to the top and try another one. Soon you will be an all mountain skier.

Jiminy has always featured a high quality teaching program focused on making the novice skier ready to come back for more after the first day on the hill. The teaching is adjacent to the base village. But unlike many other areas, Jiminy offers beginners access to suitable terrain from the top of the mountain to the base. The combination of Westway and Outback and the winding Lower Glade, and Upper and Lower Slingshot is green circle all the way.

After a good snowfall, the all-natural John Hancock trail at the north end of the area is a locals’ favorite.
