Jay Peak, Vermont

Other activities

The idea here is to enjoy the great outdoors. The ice skating rink is sometimes the site of impromptu ice hockey games. But you’ll need to bring your own skates. The region is well known for its snowmobiling; rent a snowmobile and book a guided tour through the Jay Village Inn (802-988-2306). Try night sledding behind Hotel Jay; ask the front desk for sleds. For sleighrides, call Phil & Karen's Sleighrides (744-9928) in Westfield.

If the weather -- or your tired legs -- drives you indoors, Hotel Jay runs movies on channel 8 on all hotel TVs every night for kids at 7 p.m. and for adults at 9 p.m. (No, not those kind of "for adults" movies!) Waterfront Lanes (334-8144) in nearby Newport has bowling. Jay has a few shops worth visiting, including The Snow Job (where you’ll get the best tunes around) and the Jay Country Store. But, if you’re planning to take a shopping excursion, we suggest heading to Burlington, Montreal or Magog. In the spring, visit one of the nearby maple sugar shacks.
