Getting there
By
air: Targhee is served by airports in Jackson, Wyo., and Idaho
Falls, Idaho. Jets fly into both airports and resort shuttles pick
up guests by reservation. Four major carriers now serve Jackson
Hole with jets: American, United, Northwest and Delta. There's non-stop
daily service from Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis
and Houston, plus weekend non-stop service from Atlanta and Dallas.
You can rent cars at either airport.
By car:
Targhee is just inside the Wyoming border on the west side of the
Tetons, accessible only from Idaho. From Jackson, follow signs to
Wilson on Hwy. 22, then go north on Hwy. 33 at Victor, Idaho. Turn
east at Driggs (the sign is on the roof of a building), and drive
12 miles to the ski area. About eight miles from Driggs, you'll
start to suspect you're lost, but keep goingyou can't make
a wrong turn. Coming from Idaho Falls, take Hwy. 20 to Rexburg,
and turn east on Hwy. 33 to Driggs. Grand Targhee is 42 miles northwest
of Jackson, 87 miles northeast of Idaho Falls and 297 miles north
of Salt Lake City. Be forewarned: Leave at primetime and you're
in a parade of bumper-to-bumper traffic, both up and down the mountain.
Getting around: If
you are spending your entire vacation at Grand Targhee, don't rent
a carthere's nowhere to drive. If you stay in Jackson, we
recommend you ride the Targhee Express bus that picks up in Jackson
and at Teton Village. It's $71 for round trip and full-day lift
pass; call (307) 733-3135. The highway between Jackson and Grand
Targhee is steep going over Teton Pass (up to 10-percent grade).
We caution against staying at Targhee and driving to Jackson for
the nightlifeif you want Jackson's nightlife, stay there. |
