Getting there (Area Code 970)

By air: Despite its seemingly isolated location, it's actually quite easy to reach Crested Butte. The nearest airport is Gunnison/Crested Butte Airport, 30 miles from the resort. It services both jets and commuter planes with United, United Express and American Airlines.

Alpine Express (800-822-4844; 970-641-5074) meets every arriving flight and takes you directly to your hotel or condo. For reservations, call Crested Butte Vacations (800-810-7669) or the company directly. Hertz, Dollar and Avis operate at the Gunnison/Crested Butte Airport.

By car: Crested Butte is at the end of Hwy. 135, about 30 miles north of Gunnison. It's about 230 miles from Denver via Hwys. 285, 50 and 135. From Colorado Springs, take Hwys. 24 West, 285 South, 50 West, then 135 North to Crested Butte.

Getting around: No need for a car. Crested Butte's free town-resort shuttle, running every 15 minutes, is reliable and fun to ride, thanks to some free-spirited and friendly drivers. Town taxi for after-hours travel is available at 349-5543. If you have a car, you'll find limited parking in town, so it's best to use the shuttle. The resort base has two free parking lots and a lot that charges $5 a day.
