Cannon has no slopeside lodging, but nearby Lincoln and Woodstock (about 15 minutes south) and Franconia (about 5 minutes north) have accommodations to suit just about any need. Long known as a ski town, Franconia has several quaint New England Inns, the nicest being the Sunset Hill House (800-786-4455; 823-5522; $–$$; left) and the Franconia Inn (800-473-5299; 823-5542; $$–$$$; below). Just outside Franconia on historic Sugar Hill (the site of the first ski school in North America), the Sunset Hill House is a restored farmhouse built in 1789 that has wonderful views of the Presidentials and the Green Mountains. The Franconia Inn is a lovely turn-of-the-century inn with hand-hewn beams in the cozy lobby and a sunny dining room. Some of the rooms have been renovated recently; others still have quaint old bathrooms with claw-foot tubs.

The Inn at Forest Hills (823-9550; $–$$) is a beautifully restored, English Tudor-style B&B built into a house that was once part of the grand Forest Hills Hotel. It’s just about a mile from the village of Franconia, on Rte. 142, heading toward Bethlehem.

The modern Franconia Village Hotel (888-669-6777; 823-7422; $$) has an indoor heated pool, fitness and games rooms, and a full-service restaurant.

Among the least expensive places to stay are the Hillwinds Lodge (800-473-5299; 823-5551; $); the Cannon Mountain View Inn (800-823-9577; 823-9577; $), with rooms renovated in early 2004; and The Eastgate Motor Inn (866-640-3561; 444-3971; $) just off I-93. The Kinsman Lodge (866-546-7626; 823-5686; $) is a casual and affordable B&B.

About 30 minutes north is the newly renovated and reopened Mountain View Grand (866-484-3843; 837-2100; $$–$$$$). This sprawling historical hotel now houses a European-style spa on the fourth floor, and has a fitness center, indoor pool and steamroom.
