The Inn of the Mountain Gods (257-5141; 800-545-9011; $$; right), set on a lake in the midst of the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, is operated by the tribe. The new renovation has created a monster casino with spectacular views towards the holy ski mountain.

For luxury amidst beautiful art, head to the Hurd Gallery & Guest Homes (800-658-6912; 653-4331; $$$$) in San Patricio near the junction of Hwys. 70 and 380 or around 30 miles from Ruidoso. Spectacular lodging starts at $200 a night.

The Lodge at Sierra Blanca (formerly the Hawthorn Suites) (258-5500; 800-527-1133; $$) is downtown Ruidoso’s upscale choice in lodging. It features all suites with amenities including indoor pool, hot tub and massages.

Swiss Chalet Inn (258-3333; 800-477-9477; $; below left), perched above town, is one of the last lodges before the turnoff to the resort. Views from the restaurant are beautiful.

Enchantment Inn (378-4051; 800-435-0280; $) is a full-service hotel. Shadow Mountain Lodge (257-4886; 800-441-4331; $) is designed for couples, with kingsize beds, fireplaces and hot tubs. Holiday Inn Express (257-3736; 800-257-5477, $) includes breakfast. Sitzmark Chalet Motel (257-4140; 800-658-9694; $) offers inexpensive packages including lift tickets.

Condotel (800-545-9017; 258-5200) offers a large selection of two- to six-bedroom condos, cabins and private homes. Choices can be viewed and booked online at www.ruidosoreservations.com.
