Alyeska, Alaska

Lessons
(2006/7prices)

Group lessons: Alyeska packages its ski and snowboard lessons, a real benefit for those traveling from the Lower 48. For example, adult intermediate and advanced skiers can get a lesson, lift ticket and rentals for $75, or the lesson alone for $40. (The snowboard price is $80 for the package, $40 for just the lesson.) Beginner skiers and snowboarders pay $60 for a package, $40 for just the lesson.

First-timer package: First-timers pay $60 for a lift ticket-lesson-rental package; for the lesson alone, $40.

Private lessons: Skiing, telemarking or snowboarding cost $60 for one hour, $30 for extra students. Telemarking lessons are not regularly scheduled, so make advance reservations with the ski school, (907) 754-2280. If you're enrolled in a private lesson, ask about discounted lift and rental prices.

Special programs: The Challenge Alaska Adaptive Ski School, a chapter of Disabled Sports USA, provides skiing for the disabled: all disabilities, all ages, by reservation only. A skier with a disability, and buddy, can buy discount lift tickets and rent adaptive ski equipment. Open daily, usually December 15 to April 15. The Hotel Alyeska and Tramway are fully wheelchair-accessible, and Challenge Alaska has material on other wheelchair-accessible accommodations and amenities. Challenge Alaska, 3350 Commercial Drive, Suite 208, Anchorage AK 99501; phone (907) 783-2925.

Racing: A $1-per-run race course is open on selected dates.
