Bearing
the name of Alf Engen, the Norwegian ski jumper who came to Utah
in 1930, the ski school is recognized in the industry for its founder and contributions
to the development of professional ski instruction. Lower-level
ski lessons meet at the base of the Albion lift, while upper skill
levels meet at the Mid-Mountain Meeting Place. For all ski school

Group lessons: Levels 15 take two-hour lessons, $45. Levels 6 and up get 2.5-hour workshops that focus on specific skills such as parallel turning, moguls and powder, $58.

Private lessons: A one-hour lesson costs $85; additional person, $25. An early-bird lesson from 8:309:30 a.m. costs $95; additional person, $95. Two hours, $170; additional person, $50. Three hours, $255; additional person costs $75. All day, $510; additional person, $75. Reservations are highly recommended.
Special programs: A 2.5-hour telemark workshop is offered Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays for $58. Diamond Challenge is a 2.5-hour afternoon workshop for Level 9 (true expert) skiers for $58. The instructor gives pointers, but mostly acts as a guide to Alta's steep powder secrets. Alta Lodge has a special Powder Tracks class January 12-17. Cost is $2,435 per person for double occupacy; standard room. The resort also has an excellent collection of Women's Programs offered at various times throughout the year.
Racing: Alta's race
course is located at the Sunnyside lift, open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Pay at the race arena or at the ticket office.
